Coffee Machine Filters & Descaling: Maintenance Guide
Coffee is 98% water. If your water tastes bad, your coffee tastes bad — no matter how premium your beans are. Coffee machine water filters remove chlorine, calcium, and mineral scale that cause bitter taste, reduced flow rate, and expensive internal damage to your brewer's heating element and water lines.

Choosing the Right Coffee Machine Filter
Coffee machine filters fall into three categories: charcoal water filters (used in reservoir-based brewers like Keurig and Cuisinart), proprietary pod filters (K-Cup compatible reusable pods), and descaling solutions. Charcoal filters sit in the water reservoir and remove chlorine and mineral content before it reaches the heating element.
For Keurig machines, the most important replacement is the water filter cartridge that sits inside the rear reservoir handle. This uses activated charcoal to treat water before brewing. Keurig recommends replacement every 2 months or 60 tank refills. For Breville/Sage machines, the Claro Swiss water filter fits inside the water tank and should be replaced every 2-3 months.
Descaling is equally critical. Hard water mineral deposits (scale) build up inside the heating chamber and water tubes, restricting flow and causing inconsistent brew temperatures. Descale every 3 months with citric acid or manufacturer-recommended descaling solution, regardless of whether you use a water filter.
