The 2022 LG chip detection update
Starting with select 2022-2024 LG refrigerator models, the company added an RFID chip in OEM filters that lets the refrigerator detect whether a "genuine LG" filter is installed. Compatible filters typically do not have this chip, which can trigger a non-genuine warning on the door display.
What the warning does NOT do: block water flow, prevent ice making, or affect the cooling system. It is purely a display message.
What the warning DOES do: requires manual dismissal each replacement cycle (varies by model — typically hold the "Filter" button for 3-5 seconds), and the timer indicator may not auto-reset on non-chip filters.
For affected models (LFXC22596 and similar 2022+ French Door units), some premium compatibles now include their own chips that emulate the LG response. These cost slightly more (24-28 USD instead of 17-22 USD) but eliminate the warning entirely. If your refrigerator is pre-2022, this is irrelevant.
Different filter, different fridges
